Father Jose Funes: The former director of the Vatican Observatory was Jesuit astronomer Fr. Jose Funes who famously said in May 2008 “the Extraterrestrial is my brother.”

Vatican Observatory: The Vatican Observatory has roots going back to 1582. Its current Rome location was established 1891. A new division was established in 1980 in Tucson, Arizona. It is called VORG or Vatican Observatory Research Group hosted by the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory. In collaboration with them, the Vatican Observatory built the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) on Mt. Graham near Safford in southeastern Arizona.
